Two ‘Music in the Playground’ events were introduced for the first time this term as a new way of bringing music into the heart of school life and celebrating pupils’ creativity. The aim was to share the musical compositions of our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils in a fun, informal and enjoyable setting. The projects began during Book Week, inspired by the theme of Belonging, with pupils composing music in styles they personally enjoy. Using Bandlab, Year 5 pupils used the software to select and combine loops to create a soundtrack for their written work, My Island, while Year 6 built on their prior learning about drum grooves by composing their own beats, layering selected loops and writing original rap lyrics. The events were led by keen pupil DJs from each year group, who confidently introduced the tracks and played the playlists for the school. Sharing this work in the playground allowed pupils to showcase their creativity with pride and helped to further embed music as a visible and valued part of everyday school life.
