Maths at Wallace Fields Junior School

At Wallace Fields Junior School, we believe maths should inspire curiosity, build confidence and help children appreciate the power of mathematical thinking. We want pupils to see how maths connects to everyday life and supports learning across the wider curriculum.
Our aim is for all children to become fluent in key mathematical concepts, reason confidently and apply their skills to solve a range of problems. We encourage pupils to make connections between different areas of mathematics, developing a deep and secure understanding.
We teach maths through a mastery approach, where most pupils progress through the curriculum at the same pace, supported by high-quality teaching and rich mathematical discussion. Children who grasp concepts quickly are challenged through deeper reasoning and problem-solving, while those who need additional support are given time and opportunities to strengthen their understanding before moving on.
Maths Anxiety Webinar
In our September maths parent workshop, we spoke to Anne Okafor live, who shared her own experiences and advice for supporting children with maths anxiety. Miss Sarjeant has been working alongside Anne this term to provide staff and children workshops. Please find attached a webinar for parents on how you can support your children with anxiety around maths. https://vimeo.com/483278706
